Port Insight and Action plan released at CentrePort

On March 15, members of the Port Health and Safety Leadership Group, Minister Michael Wood, Worksafe, Unions, and Maritime NZ, visited CentrePort Ltd to release the Port Sector Insights and Action plan.

Hon. Michael WoodKirstie HewlettPhil ParkesRoger Gray, and Maritime Union National Secretary Craig Harrison, spoke at the media stand up about how the plan prioritises areas of improvement that will make a real impact on port worker safety.

CentrePort is fully behind building a resilient port sector where people thrive and worker health and safety is prioritised. We believe working with our partners and stakeholders to implement the action plan will produce a better outcome for our industry as a whole.

The Port Sector Insights Picture and Action Plan set out actions across six areas:

  • A fatigue risk management system to reduce the risks associated with worker fatigue;
  • An approved code of practice for loading and unloading of cargo to create more consistent regulatory standards in relation to some of the highest risk activities in ports;
  • Recommending the Government extend the Maritime NZ designation to cover the whole port;
  • Improving incident reporting, notifications, insights and learning across the ports;
  • Improving training and workforce issues;
  • Ensuring the sharing good practice in New Zealand or overseas to encourage continuous improvement on ports.
